During the first week of my residency in the canyon I spent several days exploring the South Rim along Desert View Drive and the various trails along the edge. I contemplated my anticipated hike to the bottom and tried to take in the enormity of the place from the many vantage points along the route. I prepared my legs for the hike down by cycling and hiking between industrious spells in the studio, preparing paper sculptures for the freezer.

Out on location I recorded organic features of the landscape, looking for an inspiration source that could inform a body of work and describe the features of the canyon.

Through the month I was to see Mule Deer, Elk, Condors, Squirrels, Chipmunks, acrobatic Raven, Lizards, Scorpions and Hummingbirds. The surprising feature along the canyon edge is the wealth of green forming a stark contrast to the red and blue hues reflected from the depths of the canyon.
