This portfolio is named after the Hakatai Shale formation.  Pale elliptical patterns run through the body of the rock, I have represented these shapes in the body of the ice sculpture.

As you descend down into the canyon on the South Kaibab Trail, evidence of the natural forces which have shaped the canyon are all around you. Ice, water, temperature change are also key factors in my own process.

The integration of location based materials is key a factor in the finished sculpture, these sample materials were carried up from the bottom of the canyon. Hakatai was photographed on location at the south rim on May 21 at around 8.30am, as the ice thawed in the early morning sun I carefully eased out some of the paper structures within the ice to reveal elliptical blurred windows to the canyon beyond.
