'Hermit' was photographed against the backdrop of the red walls of Hopi House at around 7am on 14 May, trying to capture some of the warmer tones and shades of the canyon through the ice. Inspiration for this work came from of the incredible slabs of fractured rocks photographed on a hike down to Cedar Ridge via the South Kaibab Trail on 11 May.

At this stage of the residency I have not yet started to integrate rock debris into the ice and the final piece is far more formally constructed than sculptures that will emerge in the following week.

After this photo shoot I deliberately broke the sculpture up allowing the paper shapes to dictate their own positions in a tray of water with integrated rock debris for the 'Hermit 2' series.
